SINGLES

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH = An exceptionally good cake!!!

Da NUMEROS:

A - Z:

A:

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

THE ALIENS - LUNA - PET ROCK RECORDS

Ex-Beta Band men return again from a planet far far away… before the overly long credits run, there’s time to fill you in; imagine Spiritualize on a gospel trip with the warped genius of Thom Yorke underpinning everything, wonky wink n all! Genius! Welcome back boys, interview to come!

ALPHABEAT - BOYFRIEND - CHARISMA

Like abba without the kinky nazi-themed orgies, Alphabeat rock my soggy pop heart with their sheer lusciousness, hell, we interviewed ‘em before every magazine was after their perfectly shaped sonic-bottoms! Didn’t Jonathan King have something to do with Charisma records, ooh, and inded err!

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5420

AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB - ALL THE LOST SOULS WELCOME YOU TO SAN FRANSISCO - COOKING VINYL

I can appreciate their position and legendary status, but there’s still something about this guys which makes me wanna throw myself from the top of a building for a brief, quick death - none of this slo-mo shizzle, I ain’t a specialised bbc-channel!

THE ANOMALIES - KID RIOT - BEYOND MUSIC

An awesome idea, mixing libertines inspired garage rock with some fine skanked Mcing in the breakdown, could do with a sonic polish though (respect for the bicycle bell flourishes)…

THE ASH AND THE OAK - INSIDE OUT - KRUGER

Impressive mixing of Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies and the light Indie touch of prime Bluetones, soulful in a tight jeans sense!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

ASILENTFILM - THIRTEEN TIMES THE STRENGTH - XTRA MILE

Lush, epic, and strikingly deep, ASF have the skills to rock any stadium, and without that gut feeling that you’ve somehow sold your soul by admitting you love this band-great stuff!

THE ASTEROIDS GALAXY TOUR - THE SUN AINT SHINING NO MORE - SMALL GIANTS

60’s beat chic with the voice of Operator Please and the soul of Duffy, without that nagging feeling that you’ve heard it all before…

B:

BECK - GAMMA RAY - X L RECORDINGS

Impressive come back, the question is, what next?

SAM BEETON - NO DEFINITE ANSWER - RCA/SONY BMG

Another bland singer songwriter for mass consumption…

DAN BLACK - HYPNTZ - WWW.MYSPACE.COM/DANBLACKSOUND

Recalling the pop-savvy of The Eels at their most striking, Dan Black’s fragile voice and startling pop clarity works so perfectly with those lush strings propping every hook up…

BLACK DANIEL - SAY HELLO - PIECES OF EIGHT

Reminiscent of Cake at their starkest with a Loud Reed-like street talking vibe, spoken word pop usually leaves me cold, but there’s something so earthy about this release! Also, what’s with all the band names including the word Black? Is Black the new Black? Aye curumba!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

BLACK KIDS - LOOK AT ME (WHEN I ROCK WICHOO) - ALMOST GOLD

Indie Pop starlets have been surviving a bit of a backlash of late, mainly in America (where they expect all bands to have a stadium-filling grunge like edge to their performance to qualify it as something great or deserving of the hype their first 2 singles brought) the truth is, this music needs to be performed with a little less machismo and a little more subtlety, otherwise the pop genius will be buried in bravado, and we’ve got enough of that in our musical climate right now…

BLACK TIDE - SHOUT - INTERSCOPE

Rocking like it’s 1980, these guys certainly bring something more exciting to the large list of revival bands currently rocking out post-Darkness, definitely worth checking out!

BLAK TWANG - CHAMPAGNE LIFESTYLE - ABSTRACT URBAN

Great lyrics, great beats, great samples - UK Hip Hop has never been in such fine form…

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

BON IVER - FOR EMMA - 4AD/JAGJAGUWAR

Horn-aided folk with a baked in lushness I can’t quite put my finger on; I’m hearing TV On The Radio, Beach Boys, CS&N, Flaming Lips, Specials, Banhart etc. without replicating any of their sounds, the melancholy literally drips from the slab of brilliance!

THE BREEDERS - BANG ON - 4AD

I think the spark may have gone on this one…

BRITISH SEA POWER - WAVING FLAGS - ROUGH TRADE

True Indie might battling a truly independent mindset - great stuff, check em out on tour soon!

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5354

C:

CALEXICO - TWO SILVER TREES - CITY SLANG

Brooding Americana with a hushed intensity, back on fine form boys!

BRENDAN CAMPBELL - PIRATE SONG - EVERYBODY’S RECORDS

Piano led pop wonderfulness deserving a Daniel Powter ascension to infamy!

ISOBEL CAMPBELL & MARK LANEGAN - COME ON OVER (TURN ME ON) - V2/CO-OP

Bluesy balladry caked in nicotine and vein pricks from the belle & Sebastian/Screaming Trees pairing…

THE CHEMISTS - SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND - DISTILLER RECORDS

Brit Rock with a heavy, melancholic heart, sagging with the urgency and pain that explodes on impact - The Chemists could be the perect band to fill the hole the mightily fine Reuben left, sadly, recently…

CITY REVERB - CITY OF LIGHTS - DUMB ANGEL RECORDS

Taking Hot Chip’s plaintive electro pop subtleties and adding something a lot more sombre and stirring to the mixture, CR may not explode on contact, but once they’ve drawn you in you’re powerless to resist!

TURNER CODY - FIRST LIGHT - BOY SCOUT RECORDINGS

Playful anti-folk wonkiness from the master…

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

THE CORAL - BEING SOMEBODY ELSE - DELTASONIC/COLUMBIA

Breezy release from those scouse Indie pop merchants announcing the arrival of their forthcoming greatest hits set, let us hope this is not the end!

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5103

THE COURTEENERS - THAT KISS. X - A&M/LOOG

Driving, intense guitar pop genius from those fast rising young bucks!

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5574

D:

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

DANDY WARHOLS - MISSION CONTROL - BEAT THE WORLD RECORDS

Everyone’s favourite drone-pop merchants return with a more violent affair, pukish, modish, ah to hell with it, I don’t care, thank my mercies they’re back!

DAP-C Ft BLAK TWANG & GEEJAY - MUSIC GAME - NGU RECORDS

The problem with speeded up samples is that now all you’re left with is thoughts of Kanye West-otherwise a sterling effort from the uk hip-hop crew…

DARK CAPTAIN LIGHT CAPTAIN - JEALOUS ENEMIES - LOAF RECORDINGS

Hushed melancholy dripping all over some wondrously progged out folk-definitely worth pricking an ear to!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

THE DATSUNS - HUMAN ERROR! - COOKING VINYL

With a whole new sense of purpose and direction, The Datsuns prove perfectly how essential they are to the musical climate in just over 2 minutes length, who else could do it so stridently…

THE DAWN CHORUS - SHE’S LIKE AN ANGEL - JELLY MAID MUSIC

Disappointing single from a band who should know better, gone is the urgency and instead it’s replaced with a whiney song I can’t get excited about….

DEUS - ETERNAL WOMAN - V2/COOP

Wired, warped brilliance from the masters of alternative jazz prog funkiness - welcome back!

DILEMMA!!! DILEMMA!! - LIKE A THIEF - STONETRAX

New wave bounce with a girlie pop heart, being spanked by the Dresden dolls…

THE DODOS - FOOLS - WICHITA RECORDINGS

Prog-folk, you gotto love it, driving guitar lines, woozy harmonies-buy now!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? - DAWN OF THE DEAD - VIRGIN

I dunno which I like most, the skronk-a-thon electro-funked up fuzziness of their usual barn stormers, or the electro-Indie melancholy of this

DORP - PIGS DO FLY - CANED AND ABLE

Sparkly brit rock from those ever impressive dorp boys…

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

KRIS DREVER, JOHN MCCUSKER, RODDY WOOMBLE - SILVER AND GOLD - NAVIGATOR

3 folk luminaries combine to create a super-folk hero, fusing together and gaining immeasurable power compared to their singular, mortal bodies. Dylan, Cash, Thompson quake in their shoes as the folk-bot sets it’s laser-shooting eyes on their moulding todgers-be fearful!

DUFFY - STEPPING STONE - A&M/ROUGH TRADE

Soul for those who have selective amnesia… Dusty who?

E:

TERRY EDWARDS & THE SCAPEGOATS - THREE BLIND MICE - SATORIAL RECORDS

Cuban fusion from one horn-y beast…

ELECTROVAMP - DRINKS TASTE BETTER WHEN THEY’RE FREE - ISLAND

Heavy handed synth sexiness, with the subtlety of a Sugababes track via Justice’s most perverted dreams - impressive…

THE ELEMENTS - HOLDING OUT - ACID JAZZ

Soulful country never sounded so sweet…

ELENA - PINK PUNK - WWW.MYSPACE.COM/MUSICELENA

Urgent rock with a concrete-strength cheek, Bolan would be proud!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

THE EYE JAB - WHO STILL BELIEVE IN LOVE - SALVIA

With the rhythmic elasticity of Foals via the striking melancholy of Vampire Weekend, TEJ are a hypnotic treat, like Arcade Fire via the mid 90’s alt rock world

F:

FINGER ELEVEN - PARALYZER - WIND UP RECORDS

Smartly crafted grunge rock, light on the grunge heavy on the rib kicking rocking ness-great stuff!

THE FINS - ADAPTOR - NUMERICAL BLUE

Dynamic stab at grunge rock, brooding vocals, swishing rhythms, an almost Indie-disco beat-mightily impressive!

FIVE O’CLOCK HEROES - ALICE - GLAZE RECORDS

Kitsch and playful Indie rock, quite a surprise, hook laden and catchy as feck-I’m in shock!

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=3159

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

FROM PLAN TO PROGRESS - GLOBAL REACTION - LIME RECORDS

Slamming melodic hardcore with the pace and urgency of prime Pennywise via the more melodic, yet thrashing quality of A Wilhelm Scream… fists in the air in unison people, don’t make me have to tell you twice!

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND - KICKING AND SCREAMING - JOIN US RECORDS

How did FFAF become so good after dumping their major label?

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5634

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

GIANT JNR Vs. EARTHA KITT - I WANT TO BE EVIL -

How much dya wanna bet that there’s some ingenious way of including scantily clad women in the promo video for this? Though to be fair, gotto look better than Ms Kitt in a body stocking!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

GRAMMATICS - NEW FRANCHISE - DANCE TO THE RADIO

Excitingly forward thinking pop, dramatic and dynamic, fused with some tension building devices that turn this nugget of pop into a mini-horror film!

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

THE GRAVITY CRISIS - JAPAN - MIMEISMONEY

Explosive garage rock with enough semtex packed into those riffs there ought to be a law against it! Ingeniously crafted and impossible to forget…

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=5565

Spiky slice of pub rock malevolence, with the impact of a fist between your front two teeth…

I:

I CONCUR - OBLIGE - BREW RECORDS

With the rasp of Morrissey and the agonising intensity of Echo & The Bunnymen, IC have the world in their hands (well, at least the UK)…

INFADELS - A MILLION PIECES - WALL OF SOUND

Surging, direct, passionate Indie rock with a chorus that splits you right down the middle and feels it’s way around your organs, leading onwards to your heart where it’ll burn an infidels-sized logo there forever more…

READ OUR INTERVIEW: http://www.subba-cultcha.com/article_feature.php?id=2164

EPs

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM EP OF THE MONTH = rum - diddly - I - scrumscious release!!!

EPs:

A - Z:

B:

BEYOND THE GRAVE - SANDS OF DESOLATION - WWW.MYSPACE.COM/BEYONDTHEGRAVEUK

Fuck yes, some stabbing metalcore guitar lines and the same sort of Metallica-worshipping rawness of Bullet For My Valentine, nice slap bass effect too-these guys rock with their cocks out, bigger than most too-definitely worth your attention fellow metal brethren! (J.C)

C:

THE CATHODE RAY SYNDROME - ARGH - WWW.WARAGAINSTCLICHE.COM

Impressively off kilter post-rock shenanigans from TCRS, recalling Mogwai and Lint at their rawest. Demo quality sound prevents this from being a truly stunning record, but definitely 3 steps in the right direction! (J.C)

D:

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM EP OF THE MONTH

DRUMS OF DEATH - …STEP IN THE RING - GRECO-ROMAN

Mind melting electro manipulation with a dark house-ian underbelly, freakish noise and swirled distorting works like a fast burrowing insect, making a b-line for your grey matter! (J.C)

E:

ENJOY DESTROY - ENJOY DESTROY - FIRE ONE

Incredibly polished set of songs that mix dark melodic tracks with the pop sensibilities of some of the biggest pop-rock crossover artists. Narrowly missed being EP of the month - but I’m genuinely enthused by these guys. More please. (CM)

G:

GLYDER - WEATHER THE STORM - WWW.GLYDERMUSIC.COM

Hard rocking beyond all our means, Glyder provide the perfect music to beat people up to!

I:

IAN M HALE - GREETINGS FROM SAN FRANCISCO - WAX RECORDINGS

Some nice semi-acoustic pop tunes from Mr Hale. Perfect for people who wish that Jack Johnson would grow a pair. Some nice bluesy licks and a slight undertone of Manchester. Really, really nice. (CM)

IS SHEPHERD - ASCENDEZ VOUS - www.isshepherd.com

Newcastle based boy/girl group with some lovely chord changes and a midweight pop/indie sound that will have lovers of Travis, The Script and such reaching for their wallets. (CM)

J:

JOHN JONES AND THE BEATNIKS MOVEMENT - ENGINE POWER - FUCKOFF RECORDS

Noisy, fuzzy driven indie-noise with some nods to the likes of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Eighties Matchbox Beeline Disaster. Grunge isn’t dead, it’s just moved to a different state. (CM)

N:

NEIMO - POISON THE CHALICE - SHANGRI-LA

French label-mates to the Duke Spirit produce a cracking ep of soulful indie with well written songs, and Alan Moulder twiddling the knobs. Expect to hear more from this lot. (CM)

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM EP OF THE MONTH

THE NEW UP - BROKEN MACHINE - www.thenewup.com

The complete alternative new wave package, serving as a lighter relief to The Organ (see below) there’s a world of minor chords, girlie vocals and some great key changes. A storming debut that bodes well for future releases. (CM))

O:

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM EP OF THE MONTH

THE ORGAN - THIEVES - MINT

Serving up the remains of the sessions that would have formed a follow up to “Grab That Gun”, The Organ are another example of a stunning band whose star shone brightly, but all too briefly. Eighties angst with Noughties attitude. Let this be their epitaph, and it’s a fine one at that. (CM)

P:

PSYCHOBABY - PSYCHOBABY - www.psychobabyrocks.com

Lightweight melodic rock, with some gorgeous rock-chick vocals of the type that’s not terribly hip right now, but they do it very well. I’d be interested to see them live - I bet they’d bring the house down. (CM)

R:

RED BLOODED WOMEN - YOU MADE YOUR BED EP - www.myspace.com/redbloodedwomenmusic

Lovely girlie vocals, with twee harmonies and a delicious retro electro-pop sound that puts them more in line with the credibility of Goldfrapp or Annie than any throw away pop losers. (CM)

S:

SLOW CLUB - LET’S FALL BACK IN LOVE - MOSHI MOSHI

Sounding somewhere between Port O’Brien, Polyphonic Spree and a Missisippi Methodist Sunday School Choir, this is a great find for anyone who appreciates, sing-song oriented folk-tinged American tweecore. (CM)

THE SOUND OF THE LADIES - SCRAPE THE PAINT - www.thesoundoftheladies.com

A gorgeous voice, and a set of songs awash with angst, pain and beauty, Birmingham based Martin Austwick releases a melancholy, minimalist and touching set of songs, available free from his site for a limited period. (CM)

T:

TSPOPROCKBAND - REVOLUTION OF LOVE - www.myspace.com/rspoprockband

Finland based band who do the Ronseal thing - gentle pop-rock, chirpy and inoffensive. Not particularly mind-blowing, but genuinely pleasant. (CM)

U:

US & THEM - THE STRANGEST LIFE WE’VE EVER KNOWN - GENRELEYES

Whoever writes their press releases is a smart cookie. Musically, they’re a Surrey based indie 4-piece, with a sound which isn’t particularly revolutionary, is tight and intelligent, with songs that go in, do what they need to, and get out. (CM)

(C.M) = reviewed by the wondrous Chris Merriman

(J.C) = begrudgingly reviewed by the tired Jeremy Chick

…Also, if you don’t agree with a review, or want to voice your own opinions, feel free to use our forum.
